Designer has different kinds of project. Like one day I need to design a logo, packaging label, poster etc.. Sometimes I want to spend my whole day for one specific subject. But if you are working in design agency or a big company, you have no choice but to follow the bosses. Unless when you are doing a portfolio. In that scenario you could pick anything you want. Like you favorite musicians, movies, products and more. What important is that you have selected a subject to accomplish.
Think about it.
Yes. After you choose a subject or you already have an assignment, you should think about it a lot. Do a research, read or talk to people. It helps! Seriously, you need to think or else you will fail as a designer. Designer, artist, advertiser or even the royalties take this steps. If you are thinking that you are the most powerful designer and you can skip thinking on what you are doing. Well... good luck and hope you changed your perspective in life. Attitude is important everywhere yo go. Well, the thing is you could not design by not thinking about it. Like how it becomes a product? Why should it be in market? You must also know the positive feedback regarding to your assigned or selected subject. The colors, images, or any stuff you must to know on what is correct. Think why are you responsible to do this. Remember that it will become one of your pieces. It is up to you if you want to mess your career. If you are lazy or you hate what you doing. Every design you made will be a part of your future. So take care and think about this.
Study.
Now, you could study and summarise all the stuffs you collect. All the words, colors, raw images, or anything related. Study how it will become effective. If it is an advertising poster. How it will catch the eyes of the audience. You need to focus because you are not allowed to put unrelated stuffs in to your project. If you get many and very much the same things you should select the best. For example you assigned to do a chocolate label. You know that it's delicious, tasty, yummy etc.. you need to choose the best word that will fit and attracts costumer and study how to execute your text. Remember that the company pays you or it will be on your portfolio. If you are not willing to put some efforts in to your project. The firing out notice is on process. Make your brain works to study. You still have time to do that.
Get a piece of paper.
It is important to have a piece of paper always in front of you. If you are running out of time get a blank paper near to you and let the pen do the rest. Sketch the idea that comes in to your mind. At this moment you already visualise your design. Sometimes what is happening to us is that we forget things after we turn our head. So I don't want you to waste your ideas. Why writers or medias always bring their journal? Because they are always have a magical words that they don't want to miss. A piece of paper will help you so much and make sure that your pen works.
Get some advice.
Hey! you're not God or master of all designers and you don't need an advice. Please take your damn pride off. Everyone needs an advice. Even the Kings from 18th century they listen to their slaves for a very little advice. It a part of our life. Also, if you have an ideas you can share it to people. As a designer you should get some advice and ask people. Like, how could you improve yourself as a designer or if you are doing a project ask them about the colors, themes, text etc.. Ask them what to add or to delete. They are not biting you. Sometimes by asking people, you will get the best advice in life not only in design. It's nice to listen. Open you mouth and it will make you smarter than ever.
